The capnogram is a direct monitor of the CO2 concentration inhaled and exhaled. Capnography is the monitoring and measuring of the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the respiratory gases. It is mostly developed and used as a monitoring tool during anesthesia and intensive care. A graph of expiratory CO2 (measured in millimeters of mercury, mmHg) plotted against time may show the Inhaled CO2, which is of concern when rebreathing systems are used.
Capnographs work on the principle that CO2 is absorbed by infrared radiation. In a capnograph, a beam of infrared light is passed across the gas sample to fall on a sensor. The presence of CO2 in the gas leads to a reduction in the amount of light falling on the sensor, which changes the voltage in a circuit. The analysis is quick and precise, but the existence of nitrous oxide in the gas mixture changes the infrared absorption. This phenomenon is called collision broadening. However, this must be corrected for measuring the CO2 in human breath.
